Welcome to Class 3!

The big idea:

 

In this wonderful topic, we will investigate the QUALITIES and achievements of inspirational people.  This topic will give us boundless opportunities to explore the concept of the 'Power of YET' as espoused by Carol Dweck.  Can studying inspirational people help us to develop a positive growth mind-set?  Our studies will focus on inventors, explorers and political and human rights activists.  These areas have been chosen to allow for cross curricular teaching.

 

English:

 

Biographies and autobiographies:

 

  • Roald Dahl Extracts: Boy - Tales of Childhood
  • Captain Thunderbolt
  • Writing biographies based on ones studied
  • Information texts on Explorers and inventors
  • Narrative and adventure stories
  • Grammar and spellings

 

 

 

Mathematics:

 

Number: To develop understanding of both whole numbers and decimals, we will be focusing on place value, ordering numbers, solving problems involving numbers and comparing numbers up to 1,000,000.

 

Solving problems involving numbers in practical situations and checking whether their answers make sense in the context of the question.

 

Empathise the importance of place value when multiplying whole numbers and decimals by multiples of 10, 100, 1000, 10 000.

 

 

History & Geography: Explorers and Inventors

As historians, we will study the contribution made by our distinguished explorers and inventors.  This topic will allow us to draw from their experiences, resilience and positive attitude in the face of what seemed impossible.

 

We will also be able to focus on the different areas of the UK and compare them to areas visited by these heroes.

Properties of materials and their uses

Reversible and irreversible changes:

 

  • Fibre glass moulding
  • Salt experience dissolving and evaporation
  • Melting and moulding candles

 

 

 

 

 

 

Religious Education & PSHE:

 

Inspirational people & relationships

Christianity: Jesus and his teachings -  The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-12)

 

Judaism: Moses and the Burning Bush - Rescuing Israelites from captivity.

 

Islam:  Mohammed and the 5 Pillars of Islam

 

We will also try to draw similiarities between these religions.

 

Music:

 

Clarinet lessons

Children will continue with clarinet lessons through Suffolk Music Service.

 

Modern Foreign Language:

French is the main language taught at school.  We also have language of the month.

 

Computing:

 

Journey to the River Sea which links to our topic explorers.  Children will explore how information travels.

 

Physical Education:

 

Invasion games: Tag Rugby/Basketball

Attacking play

Teamwork and tactics

Develop attacking principles and goal scoring skills

Consolidate FSS and complete matches using clear tactics and sport specific techniques
