Our Approach to Teaching Reading

In Early Years and KS1 we teach reading through a systematic synthetic phonics approach, using Letters and Sounds with some Jolly Phonics support materials.

Reading books are graded according to Book Band; our main reading schemes are Oxford Reading TreeSongbirds Phonics, and Project X. From an early age we like children to have an interesting choice of books, including some non-fiction. Stories are regularly shared in class encouraging a love of reading and stimulating children’s own imagination. Through guided reading sessions, children learn to develop fluency, expression and comprehension skills. They explore a range of texts, taking note of the author’s style of writing, use of punctuation, etc and looking at the similarities and differences between different text types.

In KS2 we continue using graded reading schemes until the children are confident independent readers. Throughout KS2 we support children’s reading in supervised independent reading time and in guided reading sessions. Adults continue to hear children read in one to one sessions. We encourage parents and volunteers to come into school to hear children read.

We have a large selection of books, fiction and non-fiction, available for all children to borrow from our library.
A big thank you to all who joined us and donated food for the Harvest Festival on Friday. The children were wonderful as always..............................Class 3 Parent assembly Friday 13th October 2.45pm
